MAN's Nuremberg works issued canteen tokens during the First World War when small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply outpaced by wartime demand. Zinc was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had military priority. These factory-issue pieces functioned as fractional currency within the plant's own canteen system, redeemable only on-site, which is precisely why survivors in decent condition are not unusual: they never left the factory floor.
