Ammoniakwerk Merseburg was a BASF subsidiary established to operate the synthetic ammonia plant built at Leuna during the First World War — one of the largest industrial complexes in Germany, running on the Haber-Bosch process and critical to wartime nitrogen production. Like many large industrial employers of the Weimar-era inflation period, BASF issued its own small-denomination notgeld to cover the chronic shortage of pfennig coinage that made paying daily wages practically impossible through conventional banking channels.
The Tieste Va classification places this firmly in the private industrial notgeld category rather than municipal emergency currency.
