Alten-Grabow, located near Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt, was one of Imperial Germany's larger prisoner-of-war camps during the First World War, holding predominantly Russian and French enlisted men. Camp scrip of this type was a practical administrative measure — it prevented POWs from accumulating Reichsmark currency that could fund escape attempts or be spent outside the wire, while still allowing rudimentary canteen commerce within the compound.
The 1 Pfennig denomination is the lowest in the Alten-Grabow series, and low-value camp scrip typically circulated hardest and survived least well.
