Fagus-Werk in Alfeld an der Leine is better known to architectural historians than to numismatists — the factory was designed by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer in 1911, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the post-WWI Notgeld period, the shoe-last manufacturer issued its own small-denomination zinc pieces to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued German industry between roughly 1916 and the early 1920s. Factory-issued Notgeld of this type circulated internally, used by workers at the company canteen or shop.
