Anhalt-Bernburg's coinage after 1863 exists in a peculiar administrative limbo. Alexander Charles had no legitimate heirs, and the duchy's absorption into Anhalt-Dessau upon his death in 1863 was already legally anticipated — yet the mint continued striking coins under his name through 1867, servicing circulation demand in a territory that had effectively ceased to exist as a sovereign entity.
