Adolf I of the County of Mark — not to be confused with the later Adolf II — presided over a period of aggressive territorial consolidation in Westphalia, and the coins struck under his authority reflect a regional minting culture still deeply rooted in Carolingian weight traditions despite the denomination's nominal debasement elsewhere in the Holy Roman Empire. Iserlohn itself was a fortified mining settlement, and access to local silver almost certainly influenced the decision to strike there rather than at the county seat.
