Additional information

The aluminium 1 Pfennig was introduced in 1960 as the GDR consolidated its monetary identity following the currency reforms that had already split East and West German finances over a decade earlier. Production ran essentially uninterrupted until reunification rendered the entire series obsolete overnight in 1990, when the West German Mark was extended east at a politically motivated 1:1 exchange rate that economists widely criticized as fiscally reckless.

Aluminium blanks of this weight were prone to die fatigue, and later-date examples frequently show softness in the finer details — a known characteristic of the type, not a strike anomaly unique to individual pieces.
