The issuer's name 'Stadt Darmstadt' is set in Gothic blackletter at the top, beneath which the large bold numeral '1' occupies the left field alongside a framed vignette of the municipal coat of arms — a quartered shield bearing a lion and floral device — to the right. The denomination 'Pfg.' and the Notgeld designation appear in Gothic type along the lower margin.
