Obverse description Central field dominated by the wheel of Mainz — the heraldic symbol of the Archbishopric of Mainz and city of Erfurt — depicted as a six-spoked wheel enclosed within a raised circular border. The wheel is rendered in bold relief characteristic of late medieval hammered coinage. To the right of the wheel, within the field, appear the last two digits of the date '96', representing the year 1496. The initial letter 'E' for Erfurt appears to the left, completing the date inscription around the central device. The flan is irregular in outline, typical of hand-struck bracteate-style pfennigs of the period.
