The Bishopric of Bamberg held the right to strike coin under imperial grant, and small silver pfennigs of this type circulated primarily in Franconian markets during the mid-fifteenth century, when fragmented coinage rights among ecclesiastical and secular lords created a patchwork of local currencies across the Holy Roman Empire. Bishop Anton von Rotenhan, who held the see from 1431 to 1459, presided over this issue during a period of ongoing tension between Bamberg's episcopal authority and the competing minting rights of Nuremberg to the south.
