Tiengen, a small lordship on the upper Rhine near the Swiss border, produced bracteate-style pfennigs during this period under the authority of the Counts of Sulz, who held the territory through much of the late fourteenth century. These thin, fragile silver pieces were never intended for long-term survival — bracteate coinage of this weight was routinely called in and reminted, often annually, as a form of municipal taxation known as Renovatio monetae.
