The Abbey of Selz, founded by Empress Adelaide in 991 on the Rhine plain of Alsace, held minting rights as part of its imperial endowment. By the second half of the thirteenth century, small ecclesiastical mints like Selz were producing bracteate and near-bracteate pfennigs that served intensely local circulation — many never traveled more than a few villages from the striking hammer. The Bonhoff and Nesselhauf references place this piece within a documented but sparsely surviving type.
