Cuba issued a wave of collector-targeted commemorative pieces throughout the 1980s, many of them tied to subjects with no particular connection to the island — the Zeppelin series among them. The LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin did overfly Cuba during its 1928 Pan-American voyage, which provides at least a thread of justification for the theme, though the 1988 date places this decades removed from any direct relevance.

These issues were produced primarily for hard currency export sales, a common revenue mechanism for the Castro government during a period of acute foreign exchange shortage.
