Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield quartered with a golden key between two coastal promontories, a royal palm, and alternating blue and white stripes, surmounted by a Phrygian cap on a pike above a sunburst. The shield is flanked by a wreath of oak leaves on the left and laurel on the right, tied at the base with a ribbon. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper rim, while the denomination 1 PESO is inscribed in the lower field. Two five-pointed stars flank the wreath at the lower left and right.

Additional information

Cuba's sports commemorative program of the late 1970s and early 1980s was one of the more prolific in the socialist world, producing hard-currency collector pieces sold through the state export agency Cubamonedas rather than circulated domestically. This peso belongs to that series — issued a full year before the 1982 FIFA World Cup kicked off in Spain, timed for advance numismatic sales rather than any commemorative occasion.

Cuba did not qualify for España '82. The squad was eliminated in CONCACAF qualifying.
