Issued thirty years after Castro's forces entered Havana in January 1959, this piece belongs to a wave of commemorative coinage the Cuban state produced throughout the 1980s — partly for the collector export market, partly as internal propaganda currency. Hard currency was desperately needed by that point; the Soviet subsidy structure that had propped up the Cuban economy since the early 1960s was visibly fraying, and numismatic exports were one of several mechanisms Havana used to generate dollar revenue without liberalizing trade.
