Cuba's convertible peso series of the 1980s was produced almost entirely for foreign exchange — tourists and visiting workers spent these coins, not Cubans. The domestic population used regular pesos in a parallel economy that ran on entirely different terms.
Trinidad, founded in 1514, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, one year after this coin's issue date.
