The date 1492 is inscribed in the exergue beneath the scene, separated from the main field by a baseline. The upper legend reads TIERRA, TIERRA! V CENTENARIO, commemorating the fifth centenary of the Discovery of America, while the inscription 12 DE OCTUBRE 1989 records both the historic date of landfall and the year of issue.
