| Additional information |
The "¡Tierra, Tierra!" series was issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage, nearly three years before the official quincentenary in 1992 — Cuba used the lead-up period aggressively, producing dozens of commemorative pieces for the collector export market at a time when hard currency was badly needed following the contraction of Soviet subsidies.
The exergue variant is distinguished from the standard issue by a line of text beneath the central design, a detail that spawned separate catalog listings and created the kind of minor collecting subspecialty this series is particularly prone to generating.
