Cuba issued a sustained run of Olympic-themed coinage throughout the 1990s and 2000s, largely as hard-currency earners for the CADECA exchange system rather than pieces intended for domestic circulation. This particular issue, released two years ahead of the Beijing Games, was part of that collector-export trade — priced in convertible pesos and sold through state outlets to foreign visitors and numismatic importers rather than circulating alongside ordinary coinage.
