Cuba's commemorative peso series of the late 1970s and early 1980s was produced largely for hard currency export rather than domestic circulation — the island's dollar shortage made foreign collector sales a pragmatic revenue stream. These pieces were distributed through state-controlled agencies and rarely, if ever, reached Cuban pockets.
