Additional information

Cuba's 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics commemorative series was issued well before the Games — the 1983 date reflects production lead time for a diplomatic and commercial exercise as much as a sporting one. Cuba had no winter sports program to speak of, and these coins were minted primarily for the hard-currency export market, sold through CIMEX and similar state enterprises to foreign collectors desperate for Cuban material during the U.S. embargo years.

The Sarajevo Games themselves would be the last Winter Olympics held behind the Iron Curtain.
