Cuba's commemorative peso program of the 1980s was partly a hard-currency scheme — these coins were struck for sale to foreign collectors and tourists rather than domestic circulation, generating convertible income during a period when the U.S. embargo had severely restricted Cuba's access to international trade. Santiago de Cuba's cathedral, founded in the sixteenth century and rebuilt repeatedly after pirate raids and earthquakes, anchored a series pairing architectural landmarks with the overarching theme of Cuban national heritage.
