The Army of the North restrikes were produced under Pancho Villa's Villista forces, who controlled much of Chihuahua through the revolutionary years and faced chronic shortages of proper coinage metal. Lead substitutes emerged from genuine necessity — silver and copper supplies were inconsistent at best, looted or hoarded at worst. These pieces occupy an awkward space in Mexican revolutionary numismatics: officially sanctioned by a functioning military government, yet materially desperate.
Lead examples are the least durable of the restrike materials and survivors in any condition are genuinely scarce.
