During the Mexican Revolution, Chihuahua became one of the most prolific issuers of emergency and provisional coinage, much of it tied directly to Villa's División del Norte. The "Army of the North" designation places this piece within that military fiscal apparatus — currency issued not by a civil government but by an armed force that briefly controlled the region's mines, railways, and treasury.
The brass restrikes were produced after the original runs, almost certainly to address ongoing shortages rather than collector demand. That distinction matters: these are not commemorative reproductions but functional monetary instruments made when silver was unavailable or being hoarded.
