The 1963 Dominican peso commemorates the centennial of the Restoration of the Republic — specifically the 1863–1865 guerrilla war that reversed Spain's 1861 reannexation of the country, the only instance in Latin American history of a formerly independent nation voluntarily returning to colonial rule. Rafael Trujillo had orchestrated that 1861 reannexation's commemoration for his own political theater; by 1963, Trujillo was dead, shot in an ambush the previous May, and the new government was aggressively reclaiming national symbols he had distorted.
The issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract.
