Rafael Carrera, the illiterate mestizo general who seized power in 1839 and ruled Guatemala almost continuously until his death in 1865, had himself declared President for Life in 1854. These silver pesos were struck under his authority as Guatemala struggled to maintain a functioning monetary system largely dependent on imported Peruvian and Mexican coin. Carrera's government contracted minting to private interests, and quality control was inconsistent — planchet flaws and adjustment marks are common enough on this type to be considered normal rather than exceptional.
