Issued as part of Argentina's long-running bimetallic peso series highlighting pre-Columbian and colonial heritage sites, this piece commemorates the pucará — a hilltop fortification — above the quebrada town of Tilcara in Jujuy province. The site itself was partially reconstructed in the early twentieth century under the direction of Buenos Aires academics, a restoration that later drew criticism for interpretive liberties taken with the original structure.
