Banco del Río de La Plata was one of several private commercial banks operating in Argentina under the loose provincial banking framework of the 1860s, before the consolidation that eventually produced the Banco Nacional in 1872. The denomination in pesos plata boliviana — rather than pesos fuertes or the later peso moneda nacional — reflects the practical reality of the River Plate monetary environment, where Bolivian silver coinage still circulated widely enough to anchor paper valuations.
Litografía San Martín was among the earliest commercial lithographic operations established in Buenos Aires, handling both commercial and financial printing work at a time when Argentine banks could not yet rely on specialist security printers abroad for short-run provincial issues.
