Obverse description Central device depicts the Mexican national arms: an eagle displayed, perched atop a prickly pear cactus growing from a rocky outcrop, devouring a serpent held in its beak and talons. A half-wreath of laurel and oak branches frames the lower portion of the field. The denomination UN PESO appears in two parts flanking the cactus in the lower field. The circular legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS runs along the upper periphery, separated from the inner design by a decorative chain border of barbed-wire style links. The word ESSAI is inscribed in small letters to the lower left of the main device.
