Banco de Caldas was a regional Colombian institution operating out of Manizales, and its reliance on the American Bank Note Company places this note squarely within the broader pattern of Latin American private banks that contracted ABNC for prestige printing during the early twentieth century. The "Oro Legal" designation was not decorative — it specified convertibility to legal gold pesos under Colombian monetary law, a distinction that mattered considerably in a period when Colombian banking remained fragmented among regional and departmental issuers before the Banco de la República's establishment in 1923 effectively ended the era of private note issue.
Caldas department issues from this transitional window are genuinely uncommon in the collector market. Most of the surviving ABNC-printed Colombian provincial notes exist in either remainder or specimen form rather than as issued, circulated examples.
