| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse is dominated by a central intaglio vignette of a circular medallion portrait of Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, founder of Bogotá, flanked by two allegorical winged female figures in classical robes set against an elaborate guilloche underprint. The denomination "UN PESO ORO" appears in a bold panel at the bottom centre, with the date "6 DE AGOSTO DE 1938" and place "BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA" below the central vignette. The commemorative inscription "IV CENTENARIO DE LA FUNDACIÓN DE BOGOTÁ 1538–1938" runs along the lower border, with the bank title "EL BANCO DE LA REPÚBLICA" at the top. |

The 1938 1 Peso Oro was issued specifically to mark the four-hundredth anniversary of Bogotá's founding by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada in 1538. Commemorative peso notes of this kind were uncommon for the Banco de la República — the institution typically reserved such occasions for coinage rather than paper — making this a deliberate and somewhat unusual policy choice.
ABNC produced the plate work in New York, as they did for the bulk of Colombian paper currency through this period. The commemorative mandate didn't visibly alter the printing contract or process.
