Cuba's commemorative peso program of the late 1970s and early 1980s was partly a hard-currency exercise — these coins were minted for export sale to foreign collectors, not for domestic circulation, generating convertible currency the revolutionary economy badly needed. The orange blossom issue belongs to a broader nature series produced during this period for that same purpose.

Collector demand for the series was modest, and many pieces survived in uncirculated condition simply because they never left their original packaging.
