Cuba hosted the Sixth Summit Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Havana in September 1979, a coup for Castro's government and a moment he used to argue that the Movement's interests aligned with those of the Soviet bloc. The timing was loaded — just months after the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua and with the Iranian hostage crisis about to break. Over 90 heads of state attended, making it the largest such summit to that point.
Castro held the chairmanship of the Movement until 1983, a tenure that remained deeply controversial among members who questioned whether Cuba could credibly claim non-alignment.
