| Obverse description | The Argentine national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a horizontally divided oval shield with a rising sun above, flanked by laurel branches and surmounted by the radiant May Sun. Two clasped hands holding a pike topped by a Phrygian cap appear at the centre of the shield. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA ARGENTINA' runs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 'UN PESO' is inscribed along the lower arc, all within a beaded border. Two five-pointed stars flank the denomination legend at either side. |

Issued to mark the sesquicentennial of the May Revolution of 1810 — the week of events in Buenos Aires that effectively ended Spanish viceregal authority and set Argentina on the path to formal independence six years later. The 1960 commemorative program coincided with a period of acute political instability under the Frondizi government, when Argentina was navigating IMF austerity conditions and a deeply fractured military that would eventually depose him in 1962.
