| 表面の説明 | The shield-shaped coat of arms of the Republic of the Philippines occupies the central field, displaying a radiant sun with eight rays in the upper half and an American eagle with a Philippine lion passant in the lower quarters. Three five-pointed stars are arranged along the upper edge of the shield, and a scroll below bears the legend REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES. The surrounding legend reads CENTRAL BANK OF THE PHILIPPINES along the upper periphery and ONE PESO along the lower periphery, each separated by a five-pointed star. |

This issue marks the centenary of José Rizal's birth in 1861 — the Philippine national hero executed by the Spanish colonial government in 1896 whose two novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, were instrumental in catalyzing the independence movement. The centennial was a significant state occasion under President Carlos P. Garcia, who had himself championed the "Filipino First" policy of economic nationalism in the late 1950s.
The coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract, a common arrangement for Philippine commemorative issues of the period.
