| 裏面の説明 | The reverse depicts José Raúl Capablanca seated at a chess board in a contemplative pose, rendered in detailed relief. The legend CENTENARIO DEL NATALICIO arcs along the upper periphery, commemorating the centenary of his birth. The dates 1888-1988 appear to the right of the central figure, accompanied by the mint mark. The inscription JOSE RAUL CAPABLANCA is placed along the lower portion of the coin, identifying the subject of the commemorative issue. |

Capablanca held the World Chess Championship from 1921 to 1927 and remains one of the few players in history never to have lost a tournament game across entire multi-year stretches of competitive play. Cuba issued several collector-oriented peso pieces through the late 1980s under a hard-currency export program — coins minted not for domestic circulation but for foreign exchange revenue, sold directly to overseas collectors and dealers.
The 1988 copper-nickel striking is the more common variant; a silver proof version was issued concurrently for the premium collector market.
