Produced as a pattern piece in 1953 to mark the centennial of José Martí's birth, this peso was part of Cuba's broader commemorative program under Batista — a government that found obvious political utility in appropriating Martí's revolutionary image. The official circulation strike went ahead; this pattern did not.
The .900 fine silver specification mirrors the long-established Cuban peso standard, but the weight places it squarely in the tradition of the old Spanish colonial peso duro lineage that Cuba's monetary system inherited at independence.
