Ignacio Agramonte was the commander of the Cuban liberation forces in Camagüey during the Ten Years' War (1868–1878) and remains a figure of particular regional pride — his dramatic cavalry rescue of Julio Sanguily from a Spanish column in 1871 is one of the most celebrated episodes of that conflict. He was killed in action at Jimaguayú in May 1873, aged 31, before Cuban independence was anywhere near achieved. The revolutionary government issued this piece as part of a broader series commemorating the centennial figures of the independence struggle.
