Additional information

Issued as part of Argentina's "Parques Nacionales" commemorative series, this piece honors the Perito Moreno glacier in Santa Cruz province — one of the few large glaciers in the world not currently in net retreat, making it an anomaly in global glaciological data. The glacier itself is named for Francisco Moreno, the explorer and scientist whose 1876 Patagonian expeditions were instrumental in Argentina securing its Andean border territories against Chilean claims.

The bimetallic format was introduced to the Argentine peso in 1994 following the Convertibility Plan, which pegged the peso to the US dollar at parity — a monetary arrangement that collapsed spectacularly in the 2001–2002 crisis but left the coin specification intact.
