Additional information

Garibaldi's connection to Cuba is direct and largely forgotten outside specialist circles. In 1850, exiled from Italy after the collapse of the Roman Republic, he spent time in New York before briefly working as a candlemaker on Staten Island — but his earlier 1836 involvement with revolutionaries in Rio Grande do Sul and his broader reputation as a mercenary liberator made him a genuine symbol for Cuban independence movements decades after his death. The 2007 issue belongs to Cuba's long-running series honoring foreign figures who inspired the island's own struggle against colonial rule.
