The Banco de Cuyo was one of several provincial Argentine banks granted note-issuing rights during the relatively brief experiment with decentralized banking in the mid-nineteenth century. These institutions operated under provincial authority before the long process of monetary consolidation eventually stripped them of that privilege.
PS1640 is among the scarcer entries in the Argentine provincial private bank series. Documentation on the Banco de Cuyo is thin even in specialist literature, which itself tells you something about the bank's operating lifespan.
