Obverse description The Cuban national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield divided into three sections featuring a key, a royal palm, and rising sun rays, surmounted by the Phrygian cap on a pole and flanked by an oak branch to the left and a laurel branch to the right. The legend REPUBLICA DE CUBA arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, while the denomination 1 PESO appears in the lower field beneath the arms.

Reverse description The reverse features a vivid multicolor enamel design depicting several blossoms of Cordia sebestena (Geiger tree), rendered in bright orange-red with yellow centers, accompanied by large stylized green leaves against the polished nickel field. The series title FLORA DEL CARIBE arcs along the upper border in raised Latin lettering, while the species name Cordia sebestena curves along the lower border in italic script. The date 1997 appears to the right in the field, completing the design.
