Cuba issued a series of colorized wildlife pesos through the 1990s primarily for the collector export market — hard currency was desperately needed following the collapse of Soviet subsidies, which had propped up the Cuban economy to the tune of roughly $4–6 billion annually. The Special Period in Time of Peace, declared in 1990, gutted the island's import capacity and pushed the state toward any available foreign exchange source, numismatic exports included.
KM#498 is part of that broader program. The colorization was applied after striking, not during — a distinction that affects long-term stability of the finish.
