| Reverse description | The reverse presents half-length portraits of Pope John Paul II and Fidel Castro facing each other and clasping hands in the center of the field. The event inscription ENCUENTRO EN EL VATICANO arcs along the upper legend, with the date 19 NOV. 1996 appearing to the sides of the figures. The issue year 1997 and the mintmark S are placed between the portraits and the lower legend. The names S.S. JUAN PABLO II Y FIDEL CASTRO are inscribed along the lower periphery, identifying the two figures. |

| Additional information |
Castro's December 1997 visit to Pope John Paul II — a preparatory stop in Rome ahead of the Pope's landmark January 1998 trip to Cuba — was the first meeting between a Cuban head of state and a sitting pontiff since the Revolution. Cuba had been officially atheist from 1962 until 1992, when the constitution was amended to describe the state as secular rather than atheist, clearing the diplomatic ground that made both visits possible.
