Guinea-Bissau gained independence from Portugal in September 1974 after more than a decade of armed liberation struggle led by the PAIGC. The new state's early coinage — this piece among it — was issued under the FAO coin program, a United Nations initiative that encouraged newly independent nations to mint coins promoting agricultural development and food security. Guinea-Bissau's participation was both practical and political: the country needed a functioning currency and international legitimacy simultaneously.
The FAO series gave dozens of post-colonial states an externally funded reason to establish or expand domestic monetary infrastructure.
