El Banco Minero was chartered in Chihuahua in 1878 primarily to service the mining and commercial interests of the northern frontier — a region where banking infrastructure lagged badly behind economic activity. The American Bank Note Company handled the entire series, which was standard practice for Mexican provincial banks of the Porfiriato period seeking engraved security printing that domestic facilities could not yet reliably provide.

The S162 designation places this within the Sociedad (private bank) section of Pick, reflecting its status under the 1897 Ley General de Instituciones de Crédito, which formally regulated — but also constrained — state-chartered banks of issue until Díaz's nationalization push ended most of their note-issuing privileges by 1914.
