José Martí was killed at Dos Ríos on May 19, 1895 — less than six weeks after landing in Cuba to lead the war of independence he had spent years organizing from exile in New York. The centennial of that death fell in 1995, and the Cuban state mint issued this piece as part of a broader commemorative program marking the occasion.
