Additional information

Cuba's 1985 fauna series was issued primarily for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation, a common hard-currency strategy among socialist states during the 1980s. The Cuban crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) is endemic to the Zapata Swamp and the Isle of Youth, and by 1985 was already the subject of a state-run captive breeding program established in part to prevent extinction driven by decades of hide hunting.
