Guatemala's counterstamped coinage of the 1890s arose from a chronic shortage of domestically minted silver, compelling the government to officially restamp foreign and older regional coins for continued circulation. The 1894 issues drew heavily on surviving Central American Federation and Chilean 8-real and peso-sized pieces, each receiving the Guatemalan punch to legitimize tender that would otherwise have been legally ambiguous or outright rejected.
KM#216 encompasses a notably heterogeneous host-coin population, meaning two examples of this type can look radically different beneath the stamp.
