Obverse description Black on pink underprint. A standing allegorical figure of Columbia occupies the left vignette, with a sailor resting beside an anchor at centre. A rectangular overprint inscribed 'COMISIÓN DE EXTINCIÓN DE BILLETES' is applied across the left portion of the face, with the issuer's name, place, and date of issue running across the note.
Obverse lettering UNO 1 LA REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY Montevideo, 27 de Marzo de 1875. reconoce este billete por UN PESO moneda corriente Por la Junta de Crédito Público. American Bank Note Co. New York

Reverse description Printed in reddish-purple on plain paper. A large circular guilloche medallion with an intricate engine-turned rosette occupies the centre, its circumference carrying the inscription 'LA REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY'; two symmetrical ornate guilloche panels flanking the medallion each enclose the denomination numeral '1', with elaborate lathe-work borders and arabesque motifs filling the upper and lower margins. The printer's imprint appears in a panel at the lower centre.
